Q- What's the difference between Channel trucks and skate trucks? Skate style trucks can be lighter, are almost always cheaper. There are good and okay channel trucks, the good ones will be light, have lot's of adjustment, the okay ones will have some adjustment but can be a bit heavy. Channel trucks are almost always harder wearing and so are better suited to riders of medium weight upwards who want to do donhill manouvres. Kite riders and lighter riders often choose skate style trucks................
Q- Is a cheap starter board worth buying, or should I get an intermediate first? Budget decision, if you can get hold of the extra few quid you will definitely notice the difference between a £100 board and a £160 board, plus if you need to sell you would get a better secondhand return. But if you just have tog et going on a budget, you will find enough spec to get out and ride.
Q- Is full protection essential? Only if you intend to fall off, ie yes.
Q- Are there any ATB centres around by you? yes, a seasonal one in Croyde and a larger centre at Bideford, they can both provide instruction, and equipment so you can try out the sport
